Is Your Business Local?

If so, you should list it with Google Local so that it shows up in their local search results. Go to http://local.google.com/ and look for the Add/Edit Your Business link at bottom left.

Secure Your PC With Free Software

I know I've mentioned free software before in my newsletter, but I'd like to mention it some more. Here's a free suite of Windows software: anti-virus, firewall, anti-spam, backup, and anti-phishing at http://www.comodogroup.com/products/free_products.html.

Basically, if you use Windows, you should install and use some version of each of these products, so why not get them all in one place, and free? If you already have these products, I'd say keep the ones you have already unless you're not happy with them.

Norton products, in particular, are notorious for crashing Windows computers, so that's one product I'd consider replacing if you already have it. Many people are amazed how much faster and less crash-prone their Windows computers are after they uninstall Norton.

Make Your Site More Compelling With Video Taken With a $100 Camera

Are you good at persuading people in one-to-one situations? Then you might be interested in putting some video of yourself on your website. (Or hire a spokesmodel).

This "very cheap but good enough" camcorder works very well for recording web video: http://www.amazon.com/Digital-PSV-351-Point-Shoot-Camcorder/dp/B000FD8MJS/sr=8-1/qid=1161293441/

Once you've recorded the video, you'll need to edit it. Most computers these days come with basic video editing software (Mac users have it better in this regard). You may also need to upgrade your website hosting package to be able to stream video.

Certainly not for everyone, but maybe for you? In any case, at only $100 it's a fun toy to have around or give away.

Learn Important Web Usage Statistics

Your choices for analyzing your website usage statistics used to be limited to complicated analyzers that came with your website's hosting, or expensive addons such as ClickTracks (up to $1000 a year).

Now Google offers free website usage stats for free at http://www.google.com/analytics/

Filled with pretty pie charts and all sorts of reports, this service is especially useful for analyzing how people navigate through your website. If you sell products, it's a must have tool. If you use Google AdWords, it's especially must have. If you currently run Google PPC campaigns, you may also be interested in this tool, which analyzes website landing pages: http://services.google.com/websiteoptimizer/

Have fun, and have a grand next year!
