Have you ever gotten those spam emails offering to submit your website to millions of search engines? Considering there are only a handful of search engines that account for over 95% of all search engine users, these emails are probably just a little bit off the mark.

In fact, it's not necessary to submit your website to the search engines. If your site was built correctly, the search engines will find it on their own. What is necessary, however, is to submit your website to directories.

The major directories are dmoz.org (free) and yahoo.com ($299 per year), and there are a constellation of medium and small-sized ones as well. The value of a directory listing lies not so much in the visitors they'll bring to your site, but in the boost in authority (and rankings) the search engines will give your site as a result of being linked to by a major directory.

It's important that your directory submissions be done by hand, as the directories can penalize automated software submissions. It can take up to a few months after submission before the directory will list your site, so be patient.

NOTE: once your site is listed in a directory or search engine, there's no need to resubmit it for inclusion on a regular basis. In fact, submitting your site for inclusion into a directory or search engine it's already listed in can in rare cases result in it being removed from that resource.
