Crunch42 will build your website from the ground up to rank well in search engines, but your website is only half of the equation. The other half lies in who is linking to your website.
Directory links are extremely important, and so is an active, ongoing campaign to get related websites to link to you. The more competitive your market, the more you'll need outside links.
Links need to be from sites related to your site by subject matter, not necessarily direct competitors, and definitely not from "link farms" who'll trade links with any site that asks.
As of early 2008, recipcrocal links are on their way out as far as being effective. If possible, you should get incoming links from within other website's content pages rather than their Links page.
Getting a link can be as easy as sending the following email:
Dear Website Owner,
I'm the owner of xyz123.com, and I think since both our high quality websites are about banana ice cream, we'd be doing our readers a great favor by linking our websites to each other.
How about it? I'll mention your website on my website if you'll do the same for me. Just let me know! Oh, and if you want to go ahead and put mine on there right away, my link code is Banana Ice Cream.
While a link from your Links page would be appreciated, it would be even better if you could mention my site from within the content of one of your 'regular' pages. I'll do the same for you.
Thanks!
Mr. Banana
