However, if you think in terms of several years, the total costs for a hosted cart may be the highest of the three types of shopping cart. In general, the more products, the higher the monthly fee.
This is a good option to use if you're not sure your online store will succeed -- you can cancel after just a few months and not have spent too much. And if your store is successful, it will justify the continued payment of the monthly fee.
3rd party Shopping Cart
A 3rd party shopping cart would need to be installed on your own hosting service (which Crunch42 provides). This type of shopping cart has a larger startup cost than the hosted cart above, but there are no monthly usage fees.
This is a good option if you're confident in your online store's success, or if you want to avoid the monthly fee of a hosted cart (especially if you have thousands of products).
Custom-Built Shopping Cart
If for some reason your project can't utilize one of the options above, one can be custom-built to fulfill your exact needs. This is often much more expensive than going with one of the options above, but is necessary if your needs are very specialized.
